Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp hints that Chelsea made contact with Luka Modric 'weeks' ago
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp on Sunday suggested Chelsea may have had contact with Luka Modric “three or four weeks” ago.

“This has been going on for a while,” said Redknapp, whose side may still make a formal complaint to the Premier League over Chelsea’s pursuit of the midfielder. “It has been going on for the last three or four weeks since Carlo Ancelotti lost his job. Somebody else thinks he is choosing the players, not the new manager.

“Possibly [there has been an approach]. You never know. With deals now they go to agents, then the player, before the club. There is not a player transferred that does not know a club wants him before contact [between the clubs] is made.”

Though no complaint has yet been received by the Premier League, Spurs are believed to be considering the possibility of reporting Chelsea for making an illegal approach.

Sources at Tottenham indicated on Sunday they would continue to monitor developments with regard to the transfer for signs that Chelsea had made contact with Modric prior to submitting their first bid of £22 million.

That offer, as well as a second, at £25 million, have been summarily rejected, with both chairman Daniel Levy and Redknapp vehemently dismissing suggestions Spurs are prepared to do business at any price.

That may change should Modric, currently on honeymoon, submit a formal transfer request, though the player is thought to be adamant he wishes to leave Spurs on the right terms. Redknapp, meanwhile, believes the Croatian can be mollified should Spurs match his ambition by strengthening the calibre of his team-mates.

“I think we have to show him our ambition, which we will do,” Redknapp said. “If we can add one or two good players to our squad there’s no reason we can’t have another great season.

“We can’t be selling Luka. We have to add players if we want to get back into the Champions League. An unhappy player, if his mind’s not right, won’t be playing well and that is a massive problem.”

Redknapp revealed that a number of “big, top sides” as well as Chelsea had also expressed an interest in the 25 year-old, who is under contract until 2016. Though Manchester United are thought to be monitoring his situation, Sir Alex Ferguson is thought to prefer both Samir Nasri and Wesley Sneijder, while Manchester City will move for Modric only should other targets fall through.
