John Terry has admitted that a fortnight working under a man just three years his senior has ignited his own ambitions about going into management.
Andre Villas-Boas was greeted by only muted applause from the otherwise hysterical local fans for a training session at Malaysia’s national stadium.
But the 33-year-old has already inspired much more excitement in his Chelsea captain.

‘It’s great for the players looking at this,’ said Terry. ‘Bringing in Roberto di Matteo as his assistant and giving chances to players who’ve been around the club gives encouragement to players like me, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Petr Cech that if we do our badges there will be roles in the future, whether it’s with the first team or reserves.
‘That’s my overall aim, to become a manager. I’ve got three years left on my deal and I will be 33 then, but I’m certain he will be around for a long time.
‘He’s a very intelligent man. He has attention to detail in pre-game and during training, and he’s very much like Jose Mourinho in taking it from one training session to another.’

The Mourinho comparison is impossible to avoid, especially with his thorough preparation, business-like training sessions and demands that players behave professionally and turn up on time.
So Terry was quick to add: ‘He is his own man. He’s brought in fresh ideas and given everyone a chance. There were some players last season who people thought would be out the door but he has not judged anyone on last season or the season before. They all get a fresh start until he decides otherwise.’
