Nicolas Anelka insists that Didier Drogba has nothing to prove at Chelsea, despite the arrival of Fernando Torres in January.
The Blues paid £50 million for Torres to sign him from Liverpool earlier this year, but the striker scored just once before the end of the season.
With Drogba being 33 years old and having scored the least number of goals, 13, in a season in all competitions since arriving at the club in 2004, there had been some speculation that he may not play a big part in Andre Villas-Boas' plans.
But Anelka insists that his team-mate's past contributions to the west London outfit speak for themselves.
"Didier has nothing to prove," he said, according to the Daily Mail.
"He has scored a lot of goals at Chelsea and he is happy because, if the club sign a big striker, then he still wants to win and he’s happy to have someone who can help to bring more trophies.
"That’s good for Didier, for us, for the fans and the team."
Anelka also insists that Torres will prove his quality this season after a difficult start to life at Stamford Bridge.
"It was difficult in the beginning for him but I think he looks better," he added. "He’s scored and you will see an improvement this season. Everybody knows his quality."
The Frenchman had a reputation for sulking if things did not go his way earlier in his career, but now he insists that he is willing to fight for his place at the club.
"Maybe 10 years ago that would have been me but times change and it’s not me now," said Anelka. "When you play all the time, then you stop, it’s difficult but it is part of the game. When you play for a team like Chelsea you have to fight for your place. We have a lot of good strikers."
