Cech jokes on broken nose
I would look like Batman, laughs the Chelsea goalkeeper
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has joked that he would look like Batman if he was to wear another special protective headgear after breaking his nose against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
Cech suffered the injury in the early stages of his side's Premier League encounter at Ewood Park when he collided with Yakubu Aiyegbeni, but played through the pain barrier to help the Blues to a 1-0 victory.
The availability of the 29-year-old for Czech Republic's Euro 2012 play-offs against Montenegro is under doubt as more tests are to be carried out before he can be passed fit to take to the pitch.
The former Rennes custodian, who wears a scrum cap after suffering a serious head injury in 2006, is reluctant to say whether he will recover in time for his country's crucial games but jokes about wearing more protective gear.
"We'll see how it turns out," he said on his official website. "If I were to start, then it would only be while wearing a mask.
"I already wear a headgear and I think that I would look like Batman."
"I don't want to make any prognosis," added Cech on a serious note. "Let's wait and see what the doctors say."
Flashback
Reflecting on his injury, the Chelsea keeper explained: "Yakubu was approaching me.
"I stopped him from scoring but [team-mate] Ashley Cole inadvertently hit me. I thought I would have to be substituted, that was why I gestured towards our bench to prepare the substitution.
"But then they fixed it as best as they could in that situation and somehow I finished the match.
"I'm glad to have made another two saves and this is a very important win. I'm also pleased with the clean sheet."
The victory means that Chelsea are currently fourth in the league table with 22 points from 11 matches, nine points off the pace.
