Chelsea want to kick-start their squad overhaul with the signing of Eduardo Vargas.

The Universidad de Chile forward has been linked with Liverpool, Arsenal, Napoli and Valencia.

But Chelsea have jumped to the head of the queue for the talented 22-year-old, according to Chilean newspaper La Tercera.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas has been given the green light to stamp his authority on the Stamford Bridge side with several first team players, including Nicolas Anelka, set to leave in January.

And the £9million-rated Vargas could be the first to arrive after Chelsea sent a representative to negotiate the transfer.

The Premier League club are reluctant to pay the asking price but are confident of securing the player's signature.

However, obtaining a work permit could prove difficult as the Chilean has not played the required number of internationals and would need special dispensation to have his application approved.
