Players are the biggest asset

《At the end of the day, players are the biggest asset》

Under the threat of Coronavirus, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has decided to stop all services. As a result, the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) would have to suspend matches across all divisions.

HKFA held a meeting with all the Premier League clubs days before finalising a decision on the arrangement for the rest of the season. To begin with, the 2019/20 Senior Shield final between Lee Man and Eastern Long Lions will be postponed to May. For the Sapling Cup remaining group fixtures, they have been rescheduled and these games are due to be played at the Jockey Club HKFA Football Training Centre (FTC) behind closed doors in February. Furthermore, the HKFA is hoping that the LCSD would allow and provide 1-2 venues for the Premier League games in order for the league to resume in March.

The local competitions are hugely affected by the virus, including all the departments and staffs. However, taking things into consideration, are the player’s thoughts being overlooked to a certain extent? I would have thought that the HKFA, the board members and coaching staffs of the club or even the fans, would agree that the biggest asset in football is the players. Anybody realise their concern and frustration at all?

To be fair, footballers are no different to others. The coaching staffs and players train and play regularly. It is understable that they are concerned as they will not be wearing masks during training or matches. Some may even suggest that the players who travel from Mainland China should be quarantined for 14 days once the league has restarted. Otherwise, there is a higher risk of being infected in which this has to be taken into account.

Having to fight against the virus, all parties, including the HKFA and the clubs, are all doing their utmost to get the best out of the situation, but the player’s feelings and emotions should never be neglected. Are the players being put at risk inevitably? Has anyone, ever, listened from them?

At the end of the day, players are the biggest asset.
